23 drivers taken off the road during long weekend check stops

About 2% of drivers who were tested during long weekend check stops in Regina Beach had consumed alcohol or drugs before driving. From July 31 to August 2, officers from Lumsden RCMP, neighbouring Saskatchewan RCMP detachments, Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol conducted three traffic safety check stops in the Regina Beach area. They performed about 950 mandatory alcohol screening tests and 25 drug screening tests on drivers they stopped. They detected two drivers were impaired and charged them under the Criminal Code. They detected 10 drivers had consumed alcohol before driving and 11 drivers had consumed drugs before driving; they all received roadside suspensions. Additionally, officers issued the following: - 20 traffic tickets; - two Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act tickets; and - 36 written warnings. "Thanks to the planning and effort by the Lumsden RCMP on these check stops, 23 people who chose to consume alcohol or drugs before driving were taken off the road," says S/Sgt. Jason Sauve from Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. "While we are pleased to report there were no collisions in the area during the long weekend, these results show people are still making unsafe choices. Saskatchewan RCMP will continue working to remind people that driving after drinking or consuming drugs is a danger to yourself, your passengers and others on the road."
