Obituary - Ruth Phyllis Scott

Public Submission

A much-loved matriarch and friend, Ruth died peacefully at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by her beloved partner of over 20 years, Jim Young, parents Phillip and Gladys Roland, brother and sister-in-law Howard and June Roland, and former husband Hugh Scott. Survived by her children, Tannis (Gordon) Patterson and Jaye (Coreen) Scott, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many cherished friends and family. Ruth was born on the family farm near Govan, SK. Growing up, her family moved back and forth between Regina and the farm. Ruth was happy everywhere and liked both country and city living. On July 11, 1953, she married Hugh Scott. Ruth had a successful 30-year long career with the Last Mountain School Division. Ruth kept busy with her children's activities, such as curling, hockey, 4H, music, and swimming lessons. She was active in the United Church, singing in choir and teaching Sunday School. Ruth's husband was a musician, and their home always had music. Tannis accompanied Dad on piano and organ and Jaye on accordion. In 1954, Ruth joined the Order of the Eastern Star, where she formed many lifelong friendships. Ruth enjoyed OES trips to Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Ottawa. She was a proud member for 71 years. Ruth met Jim Young at Christmas time in 1990. They shared a wonderful, loving life together before Jim's passing in 2012. This included camping trips in their iconic Boler trailer. Many summers were spent camping with grandchildren, who were given adventures of water slides and go-carts. As music and theatre lovers, Ruth and Jim were long-time patrons of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Globe Theatre, Regina Little Theatre, and Regina Lyric Light Opera. A Saskatoon trip to visit Jaye and his family always filled Ruth with joy. Trips to the cabin with sunset boat rides at Turtle Lake were another favourite time. Ruth was a talented gardener and grew every vegetable you can think of. One could taste the love in her baking, notably her butter tarts, homemade buns, and jam-jam cookies. Ruth was a fierce supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a brave outlier among a family of Habs fans. When Ruth became a grandmother in 1980, she was affectionately known as Mama. For birthdays, Mama would treat the grandkids to a shopping spree for a new outfit. At Christmas, the family was spoiled with coveted "Mama Bags", containing carefully curated gifts that suited the individual perfectly, pets included. Mama was always a joyful, sweet-natured person. She had a heart full of boundless love that she wanted to share with others. Even as dementia settled in, she never became angry or afraid. Her ability to continue making friends at the age of 91 is a testament to Ruth's enduringly kind and cheerful spirit. Thank you to Qu'Appelle House for your compassion and care, as well as the residents for being her friend. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, 1861 McIntyre St, Regina, SK, on November 29, at 11:00 AM.Donations can be made to the Regina Humane Society or to Qu'Appelle House, 1425 College Ave, Regina, SK.
