Obituary - YOUCK, Gordon
April 21, 1934 – September 30, 2025
Gordon Youck, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the Canmore Hospital in Alberta. He was born on April 21, 1934, in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, where he spent his formative years and laid the foundation for a remarkable life.
Gordon’s illustrious career began after completing his education at the Alberta Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary (now known as SAIT), where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering with a major in Electronics and a minor in Applied Math and Science.
Gordon's professional journey took him from his early days working with Canadair in Montreal to significant contributions at Boeing, where he was involved in various missile programs in Seattle and New Orleans. His engineering career culminated in a historic role with Grumman Aircraft and Aerospace divisions, where he was part of the team that tested and monitored telemetry for the Lunar Module as part of the Apollo Program from 1967 to 1970. Gordon proudly contributed to one of humanity's greatest achievements — landing the first humans on the Moon — and his name is forever etched in that momentous history. Later, he played a pivotal role in telemetry flight testing of the iconic F-14 Fighter Jet before he moved his family back to Canada, where he embarked on a new venture in farming in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, his beloved home town.
A lifelong learner, Gordon had an insatiable curiosity and a passion for knowledge. He loved reading, often found engrossed in copies of Time, National Geographic, and The Economist. His zest for life extended beyond pages; it encompassed a love for travel, exploring diverse cultures, and an appreciation for music.
Gordon's character shone brightly through his compassion, kindness, and remarkable sense of humor. He lived his life with grace and humility, always striving to uplift those around him. His mantra was simple yet profound: "If I can't enter a room and make someone smile, I haven't done my job." This commitment to spreading joy was evident in his unconditional love for his family and his unwavering support for his beloved wife, Merle, through her battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Later in life, following a move to Grande Avenue Village in Cochrane, AB, he faced health issues with grace and humility. Gordon spent his final days in the care of those at Golden Eagle View Long-term Care. He faced life's challenges head-on, accepting each day with excitement and an open heart.
Gordon is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Youck of Calgary and Deborah Stewart of Cochrane, alongside four grandchildren: James Stewart (Alexandra) of Kelowna, Michael Stewart of Cochrane, Jeremy Stark and Rebecca Stark both of Calgary. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings in Alberta and Saskatchewan: Ted (Bernice), Allan, Lila (Ron), and Edward (Ingrid), along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends both in Canada and the USA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Merle, who passed away in November 2014 after a fight with Alzheimer's disease . He is also predeceased by his mother and father Mary and Jacob , brothers Albert, Alex, David, Roy, and Elmer, and sisters Pauline and Elsie, along with siblings-in-law including Hilda, Peter and nephews Dwayne and Hans.
