RM of Lumsden council - AG subdivision hits snag

Councillors question applicant's motives

February 3, 2022

An application was brought before the RM of Lumsden Council for the purpose of subdividing 20 acres off a quarter section with the intent to winter 100 head of cattle. The application noted it was for estate planning purposes.

There are several criteria in the RM’s Official Community Plan where the council has the discretion to approve varying the size of a yard site. Estate planning is one of the criteria.

Councillors Jeremy Andrew and Cody Jordison questioned the applicant’s ability to have 100 head of cattle on 20 acres. One of Councillor Andrew’s concerns was over its proximity to the creek. Director Aimee Bryck explained she took the environmental concerns into consideration and added a condition that the applicant would need to receive a permit from the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA). Bryck said the MOA permit process would require a waste management plan. Councillor Andrew also questioned the applicant’s request for approval was based on estate planning.
