key points from this story:

  • Trump announced 100% tariffs on China
  • Tariffs start Nov. 1 or sooner
  • Canada urged to seek new trade deals
  • China trade dispute remains unresolved
  • Instability grows under Trump's leadership
  • Canadian markets face increased uncertainty

In an announcement last week that can be a surprise to no one, the U.S. president announced a new round of tariffs, this time an additional 100 per cent tariff on goods from China, on top of the 30 per cent tariffs already in effect, starting Nov. 1 or sooner.

The move, while not surprising in the sense Trump tosses around tariff threats willy nilly as a matter of routine, does seem to reinforce a message Canada needs to take to heart. While the United States has long been a reliable and stable trading partner, under Trump, stable is not a word you can associate with the country any longer.
